Chapter Thirteen

The night was going according to plan and I couldn’t be more thrilled. The tournament was exciting. Horace’s training of the gladiators was remarkable. The winner of this tournament would be Dante’s first son. Hopefully, it will be Ashton. If he survived. He’d be going off with the king, having been given the amazing gifts of his Father. I hope he’ll be immune to all venoms and fire.

I watched my sons enjoying the show, even Noel showed interest in each fight. He didn’t want to like the bloodshed, but he couldn’t take his eyes off it. I also relished the fact that he killed so brazenly tonight. Fed his vampiric hunger until the last drop without a care in the world.

My pet is really blossoming. I couldn’t wait to see how Dante will develop.

“You did well tonight, my son,” Ara said to me.

I turned to him, smiling. “Thank you, Sire.”

“I will be leaving sooner than I first planned, so make sure your son, Dante, sires one of his own for me tonight.”

“Yes, Sire,” I said. That was my original plan, but I was shocked to hear that he was leaving ahead of schedule. “May I ask why you’re leaving early? It doesn’t give me much time to train Dante’s son, Sire.”

He waved absently. “You needn’t concern yourself with training him. Once he’s been embraced, send him to my home tonight. I will train him personally.”

I frowned. “Sire, why the rush, if I may ask?”

There was a spy among our ranks who alerted Queen Amara of my plans. Ara replied telepathically.

I managed to keep my expression stoic in spite of my shock. Who in their right mind would ever betray the King? My Sire, I’ll will deal with the traitor personally!

No need. He has already been dispatched… quietly, of course. This is not something I want to make a spectacle of, my son.

Yes, I’m sure. Who was it, Sire?

Samson. Apparently, he didn’t approve of my decision to make your sons my new Lords over him. His betrayal jeopardized my plans and because of him, I’ve lost the element of surprise. No matter, I will leave with my army tomorrow morning. So now you see the urgency of why I want a son from Dante.

I see, Sire. How did you discover Samson’s indiscretions?

I received word from Karim that Queen Amara has been beefing up her ranks, if you will. His human spy informed him of the new developments in Athens, which led me to be suspicious. Therefore, I’ve been searching the minds of every vampire in my kingdom for the past seventy-two hours. I knew you and your brood were innocent, as you have never betrayed me. Still, I left no rock unturned. I scanned the minds of you and your sons when I took my new Lords from your house.

That was wise on his part. As much as I trust my children, I read their minds on a regular basis. It teaches them to always be honest because they never know when or if I’m listening to their deepest, darkest secrets.
